On Thursday, October 24, we honored hotels and allied businesses that are leading the adoption of sustainable hospitality practices at our 1st Annual Sustainable Hospitality Awards. Award winners were selected from nominated local hotels and businesses that are advancing sustainability practices through implementation, promotion and education of guests and employees.
The GMBHA recognized two Miami-Dade County hotels that have achieved Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Miami’s first hotel to achieve LEED Silver certification, the Hampton Inn & Suites Miami Brickell Downtown, was honored along with the Clifton Hotel South Beach, the first LEED Gold hotel in Florida and the first carbon neutral hospitality company in the US.
The event featured keynote speaker Jenny Rushmore, Director of Responsible Travel for TripAdvisor. Rushmore developed and now leads the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program, which launched in April 2013 and currently has over 1,800 enrolled properties.
Thank you to our generous sponsors and to Robert Hill, General Manager, InterContinental Miami, and his team for making our event a great success. We look forward to continued program growth as the adoption of sustainability practices gains momentum in the U.S. hospitality industry.
